Tauriel ramblings
This costume makes no darn sense >:C
The one I really want to make the the full outfit seen throughout the third movie. I just love that hooded sleeveless over-dress. And while I'm good with that part, and the leather bodice under it, and the suede green dress under THAT (and I completely hate myself and I DO want to put the herringbone/fish net stitching on the sleeves...), it starts to get squirrelly. Let's do a breakdown, shall we? All from Desoation of Smaug.
First appearance: "Spider" dress + deeply pointed bodice + some kinda scarf thing. OK.
Second appearance: Green dress+ leather bodice + some kinda hooded scarf thing. OK. Except for they apparently brought the dwarves in from the forest, made them wait while at least two people changed (ahem Tauriel ahem ahem. When taking prisoners to a dungeon, even heavily guarded ones, one generally doesn't stop to remove armor until AFTER they're safely away.)
Third appearance: Green dress. Not evident if the skirt is removable (potentially have different versions of this dress for different occasions). At one point you can see it pretty clearly from the back, and unless the join is hidden under the (very thin) belt, it fits a lot more like a princess-seamed garment than an attched skirt with princess seams that follow the bodice. Wrapped dark grey or brown undergarment is visible at the neck (might be the Spider dress, can't see enough under the green one to tell)
Fourth appearance: She apparently left the king's presence, took out two of her braids, and then went to visit the prisoners.
Fifth appearance: Green dress + leather bodice. Then 23 seconds later, it's the spider dress and corselet. What.
Sixth appearnce: Green dress + leather bodice.
Seventh appearance: Spider dress + corselet
Eigth appearance: Green suede dress but with the skirt not visible, leather bodice and sleeveless green overdress/cloak.
Then there's a whole scene or two in Lake-town where she wears the greens, followed by her last appearance, in which she is again wearing the spider dress and corselet. what. If I'm not mistaken, her first appearance in the Battle of the Five Armies, she's back in the greens. There is NO TIME for there to be a lot of changing of outfits going on! Quite likely it was a case of the scenes being filmed in different oufits and then being edited together.
I really have been thinking about approaching this from a practicality point of view. Like, if some of the outfits do have removable skirts, the question becomes less why and more HOW? I would feel most comfortable lacing one onto the bodice, but there could be arguments for them being stitched in loosely too. Either one I feel is impractical. Threads and laces can break, and your enemy will not wait for you to remove the offending loose fabric/ties to get back to the ass-kicking.
