totchipanda: (The Boulder Does Not Approve)
[personal profile] totchipanda
There's a poem I have in my profile. It's been there pretty much since I opened this journal. Most of the year it just amuses me, and every spring I wanna do a laugh/cry because it's just so TRUE. We had such a mild winter, not a lot of snow, not too much cold, rather a lot of mild days, just enough of all three to make things Interesting (enough snow fell that when it started to get mild, it would melt and then it would freeze, which is prime conditions for developing potholes. I think the only road I've driven on in the last few weeks that hasn't had a pothole on it is one that was repaved 6 months ago)

But, this is Alberta, land of "Don't like the weather? Wait 5 minutes". First day of spring, it snowed the night before, nice fat wet snow perfect for building snowmen. Brush 4-5" of snow off of the car. Second day of spring, interesting driving in the morning, but once the day warmed up a bit, most of the main roads cleared off and were wet but bare. Second day of spring evening, starts snowing. Have to brush a couple of inches of snow off the car again, drive home from a friend's house on streets with no discernable lanes. Park like an asshole. Third day of spring, it hasn't quit snowing. It's supposed to stop roughly noonish (Weather Network says "this morning or early this afternoon"). Supposed to go out for tea later, but if the streets aren't plowed by then (HAH! They didn't do it until the next day last month when we got enough snow that all I could hear was it scraping underneath my car) I don't wanna go >.> It's nothing like what the east coast is getting, and it is sadly rather normal (even while we're all going "SERIOUSLY?") but really? REALLY?

Springtime in Alberta
(Unknown author)

When it's springtime in Alberta
And the gentle breezes blow
At seventy miles an hour
And it's fifty-two below.

You can tell you're in Alberta
'Cause the snow's up to your butt
And you take a breath of springtime air
And your noseholes both freeze shut.

The weather here is wonderful
So I guess I'll hang around
I could never leave Alberta
'Cause my feet are frozen to the ground.
