Jun. 4th, 2025 08:22 amI am covering the front desk today so lots of alone time with minimal supervision or interruptions.
Nothing to really talk about lol. I played games for a bit. Dinner was a spinach salad with chicken that I liberated from a meeting yesterday. Then I sat down to read and it took me forever to just f'n do it, while I noodled about with games (again) and various internet searches (forgetting what I was looking for, picking up my book, remembering, and looking again). I went to bed around 9, but mostly so I could read there. Had to pause to "scrub" the cats (they both like short intense sessions where I mess up all of their fur and smooth it out). Around 11 I hit my self-imposed "goal" of roughly 1/3 of the book and a good place in the story to pause.
The first thing I'd wanted to search was a character list because one of the first chapters was a POV character that I couldn't remember if it was a "good" character or the cartoonishly evil "bad" character. Could not find a list worth a damn so I just plowed on. (It was the "good" character.) In the first 62 pages, I had some grumps. Exhibit A: The rain "clamoured" on a thatched roof. I'm not sure a fancy house with a library would be thatched to start with but loud rain? Nuh-uh. Exhibit B: A bad guy was compelled to put his arrow against his palate, and then compelled to kill himself with it, but through the underside of his jaw. Um... the palate is inside the mouth and the jaw is outside of it... I even looked up a diagram to make sure I wasn't making that up.
Exhibit C: the "good" character and a lady of questionable motives ended up soaked with rain and were stripping out of their clothes. He was wearing a silk undershirt; the type of silk was not noted, but I can't imagine this is terribly comfortable. The lady of questionable morals also had a silk under-dress but I just nodded at that lol. But further to this scene, this man, who is all of 22 years old, was thinking about the way his clothing clung to him in a way that a woman would, which made ZERO sense as the POV character. He stripped off eeveryhting except his wool trousers which... should also have been soaked. And covered in mud. And possibly blood as they had just been fighting with the group that included the victim from exhibit B.
I like this character a lot, he is unfortunately the type I like in fiction, and we generally stan a man written by a woman, but this is stretching belief.
Tonight I plan to tackle the dishes while the hockey game is on, eat a food, and then possibly attempt trousers again. Maybe I will hem the dress instead. Either way, I need to read another 3rd of the book (I have brought it with me to read on my lunch break since I rescheduled my therapy appointment and I don't feel like trekking across the street to fetch my knitting).

Date: 2025-06-05 01:42 pm (UTC)It was pubbed 2023 so I suspect lack of research. Why anyone would want to write a quasi medieval fantasy book and not look up actual medieval techniques and the like is beyond me.
