Before electronic everything, things had to be paid in cash or checks so was easier to physically see what was being spent. Like some people would have a jar/envelope of cash for the month after bills, so they could see when it was getting low or gone. And when there was no more there really was no more funds for the month. Credit card limits also seem much higher and can be used so many more places than when I was younger. Like couldn't use credit cards at grocery stores and restaurants and no internet or smart phones so no online ordering services. So, if you didn't budget and shop properly, would run out of food.
