Sep. 18th, 2024 07:53 amI got an email yesterday that "someone" had gifted me 2 months of paid subscription and coming here (rather than clicking on links even though it looked legit, I am ULTRA suspicious from the sheer number of "warning, your mcafee subscription has expired!!!!" emails I've received in the past couple weeks. Y'all, I've never had a mcafee subscription) it is legit! WHOMST??? I have SO MANY icon spots (cackles). Remember the LJ days when icons were LIFE? Ahhhh nostalgia.
Seriously though, thank you. That was a delightful surprise and I immediately wanted to load up those icon spots.
Tonight is definitely pharmacy night, I have no more of one of my meds. I quickly overwhelmed myself thinking of all the other stuff I need to do, like scoop the cat box and get my front entry sorted (truly, these will not be hours-long tasks, but you know how it goes). Potentially M and I will need to see each other sooner than we'd both like bc our friend's doggo, the bestest doggo in the entire world, is having some health challenges right now and they are taking her to the vet tonight for follow up. When I left their place last night, M said "I don't want to see you until next week" and I took that with the spirit it was intended: sooner means Badness is happening. No thank you, don't sign me up for that.
Hookay so... i signed up for Scroop's latest pattern test, a mid-late teens skirt (with modern options but meh). I am mostly curious how the inner belt will be accomplished. I expect I will not be selected (as usual) but part of the process was to have a photo of myself in underwear. I took that in 2020 but then I thought maybe I need to update it? So I pulled out the underwear bits and tried them on. If I put the corset where I had constructed it, I get a very narrow gap now through the waist and hip. If I put it where the pattern says it should fit (1-2" on the lower part of the bust), the waist tape is firmly on my ribs, the busk is much too short and stops mid-belly, and the back would overlap if not for the lacing preventing it. I also think I boned it with thin cable ties, which seem far too light now. Before I took it off, i put the petticoat I made earlier this year on and had a moment of joy bc it just looks so cute!!
So I think I want to make a new corset. I was going to rescue the bits from an older corset including the steel boning, and my aunt gave me some spiral bones from her stash (which are even documented! I found them in a 1917 catalogue) along with some sturdy fabric. One of the (eta) fabrics is much too heavy for corset-making, but the other might be ok. I could not find the original printed pattern I did, but thankfully I had written the sizing on the traced pieces so now I don't need to be guessing wtf I did 4 years ago. I was trying to guess how corsets were supposed to fit by looking at ads in that 1917 catalogue but of course it was all illustrated and they were ads, so trying to sell rather than advising on fit. Do I add some length to the pattern and try to fit higher on the bust? Right now I get zero bust support except from the chemise and corset cover, and that's just not comfortable for me. Thankfully there is time to figure this out lol.
I was asking for suggestions on what to sew on the weekend and a medieval hood was suggested. Hell yes, I love hoods, so I've been delving into that research hole (being a cozy girl forced to work) and realizing... where the heck would I ever wear this. I don't do reenactments, I don't do SCA, I barely wear anything I make at all, why would I go to the trouble of making not only the hood, but the shift and the dress and the whatever else... to sit in my closet in a bin and never be touched until I decide wtf was I thinking and sell it.
The answer is, of course, just because it would be fun. i COULD wear it in my modern wardrobe, the wool coat I bought last year has a big open neckline, a hood would add that little bit extra protection. I could make it just to make it, just to have done it and to enjoy it. SO I think I will.
