Edwardian/Teens!
Jul. 10th, 2015 11:05 pmI am sooooooooooo close to finishing my corset, I'm so excited! I put the last boning channels on today and then boned and bound it. It just needs lace (not sure if I will put it on yet, I haven't got any in my stash) and grommets, which I can hopefully do tomorrow. And then I just need to make the rest of the undies and then I can get started on outfits (squeeee!!)
But I have questions! The Edwardian Modiste is my primary pattern source right now and being historical sources, they aren't very detailed. I don't have any questions about the drafting and making, I feel like I have that pretty much down, my questions are about the layers. There's a chemise pattern (cool I know what that's for!) and a combos pattern (cool I know what that's for!) but on the combos it says it's a corset cover and drawers in one. Wait what? I can't wear the corset against my skin, I just CAN'T (that's like, corset rule #1. Maybe #2) but then I thought the purpose of combos was to eliminate the need for drawers under your chemise (I need drawers. They are not optional). But then I also found catalogue references to combos that are drawers and corset covers. So then would I wear a chemise, corset, bustier, then the combos? Phew that's a lot of layers.
It's be so ridiculously hot up here (for here... My week in Texas 2 years ago was worse) so it's hard to imagine putting all of that on, but if that's the way it's gotta be, then that's the way it's gotta be. I suppose what I could also do is make these things, and then if they don't work out, sell them. It's OK self, that's a thing that you're allowed to do.
There's also a couple "corset covers" that I think were rather intended to be bustiers. So I found a couple other magazine ads which showed similar lines and I'm gonna attempt those too. But first I want to make at least a chemise, even though I could probably get away with my Victorian combos for now.
In other news, I curbed my car today and took a nice chunk out of my tire :( I have to call the dealership in the morning and find out what I need to do. Today I had some dental work done (eating half my weight in ice cream on Sunday made me hyper-aware of a gaping hole in one tooth that's been there for awhile, so I had that fixed up) and next week I get a root canal on the other side. That's a lot of money I don't have :( And I have a ton more fillings to get done (bleh!) but the root canal will eat up the rest of my insurance and then I'll have to wait until January until it resets. But I also don't want to end up with the same pain and problems I had with my wisdom teeth soooo....
