SCA and me; apologies for double-post

totchipandaI went to Grande Prairie to an SCA event this weekend ;D I had my arm twisted into it; Nicole was like "You're coming RIGHT?!?!?!?!" If you've listened to me at any point in the last 5 years, you know that my yucky sister is heavily involved in the SCA and that in general, I don't like them. ;D I think I would have been OK if my mum and her family had come, but they weren't going. And my yucky sister sure wasn't. SO it was the first event I'd gone to without ANY family present.
But damn, did I have fun.
I sewed like a maniac for 4 days getting a set of garb made. It took me three days to finish the underdress, and just 1.5 to finish the over dress (though I didnt finish any seams, or press them open, Hee). I was quite toasty for the most part, though in the future I will definitely need a cloak.
So Allen picked me up after work on Friday, off we went on a looooongass drive (though not nearly as long as Seattle x_X). We got to Nicole's just after 9, where we proceeded to sit around, yak, watch an anime called Tsukihime (can anyone who's seen it tell me why chickypoo went to his school??) and then we went to bed, but me and Nicole lay in bed talking for another hour XD Then we all got up late. Had pancakes. Tiffany came over, we all got dressed... Nicole had on a fabulous hooped skirt which was oh so floofy, Tiffy wore kimono and hakama and had three swords tucked into her belts, and Allen was going to have to borrow garb at the site. Then we went and got drinks from Superstore (dressed in garb XD huzzah) and picked up the fifth member, Heather (also needing to borrow garb). And then we got lost >.> Made it there at noon, just in time for Archery :D
buit it was cold... so we didn't watch TOO long. I borrowed a cloak for pretty much the whole time. It started to rain at one point, and we hid inside while taking pictures of the kids in or around various things, including the Pope Bunny and a wooden bowl. The rain let up just in time for a friendly game of "Kill the Beer"
It was run by a gentleman by the name of Alistair (I found out later) and for a minimum donation of 50c, you could shoot an arrow at a can of beer at 13 paces. Knocking the beer over or piercing the can would earn you immunity and the chance to eliminate another archer. 14 participants, including myself and nicole, got to play :D We shot a practice round, where someone hit the can of beer. And then *I* hit the can of beer! I haven't shot a bow in about 10 years. Much squealing and jumping ensued. We got pictures of myself and the other guy (Sean) holding the dual-arrowed can and they let me keep it XD
but i couldnt hit it again ^^;; i got eliminated about 6 or 7 turns later. Since I was legal, I had the chance to run up and grab the beer and drink it. Since it hadn't been pierced, only knocked off, first I had to stab it with a knife. Well. You know, beer sprays when it's been shaken up and knocked off a stack of logs.... it sprayed up right in my face, up in my nose, soaked my hair and sleeve... I'm laughing like an idiot, return the knife to Alistair and stand back, laughing, and drinking my hard-won beer XD
The contest was eventually won by a 12-year old boy, who had to beat out his mother for the prize XD It was awarded at court, a lovely dragon pendant. (He of course did not have any opportunities to run up and drink his beers; he was the one who eliminated me actually)
Then came the grape stomp! The shire's identifying heraldry is a giant wine glass... It was quite interesting stepping on grapes while holding up looong skirts (my hems are SOOO dirty). After a few steps, you get out, put your feet in watery dye and step on a big sheet and write your name by your feetes. They put up the sheets at later feasts and the like.
Feast was good.. the Prince of Avacal was throwing cheese and grapes at people XD Someone yelled at him for teaching children bad habits (they were trying to teach their children NOT to throw food, and here was the prince....). Court was actually not too bad either, i remember it being incredibly boring. But it was reasonably short and the prince was quite entertaining. All concluded, time to go outside for singing!
and during the feast, one remove was a self-serve at a side table. Alistair happened to be sitting near it, and earlier in the day Nicole had asked him if he had a pet crow, and he said yes. I was like "zuh??" 'cause there used to be a guy who worked at the mall whom I pretty much never saw without a crow on his shoulder. So I asked him if that had been him, and it had been. Small world.
Singing! Big campfire. Drunken pirate/archers. Bloodthirsty children. No really! There was a round of "what do you do wth a drunken sailor" and three children contributed such bloodthirsty rounds of fire him out of a cannon and the like XD It was actually quite amusing. A few of the songs and stories needed the classification of "you'll understand when you're older". Leaders of song and story got chocolate or jelly beans, or if old enough, a swallow of port. That lasted a good... 4 hours. around midnight it was winding down, the pirate/archers were VERY drunk by this point (one I think had gone to bed already) "blah blah blah came to a halting screech" etc. Our group of 5 was getting pretty tired, we decided to call it a night and head home.
but first! Nicole gave Sean her email for a clothing trade and we chatted a bit more. Alistair found us and we chatted just a bit more and then we started saying our goodnights. we were talking pirate talk (they have a pirate group, I want to be a pirate, Nicole wanted to be the wench XD) and lets see.. how did this work, Alistair pulled me against him, but he did it right on the busted rib. I told him to be carefel and made to stand on his other side, but Nicole grabbed me and was like "hun, you're mine remember??" and i was like "but he has a floofy shirt ;_; " Sean had a floofy shirt too... well not really, actually, but it was velveteen and sofft XD group hug! Alistair hugged me and chewed on my ear.. been a long time since that happened O-o; and uhh.. then we started kissing o-o;; making out really... fill in the blanks. Been a long time since THAT happened too, it was odd, cause thats pretty much what happened with my first (only) boyfriend too. It was kinda nice (but also weird, cause he had a short beard and I could feel it on my chin later). Nicole was like O_O honey, you dont like boys. "Oh im not picky" i said. Really got in the goodbyes and went home. I did feel the need to point out that I don't go around kissing strangers ;)
WE got back around 1. Nicole and I once again stayed up WAY too late yakking XD it was about three when we decided to sleep. I woke around 10 with a headache and a desperate need to wash the beer out of my hair. Nicole got up at 11 and we had breakfast, took some pictures, surfed a little ebay, and finally at 2, Allen and I decided it was time to head back :( We wanted to get back before it was dark. We got underway JUST before three, and I got in at 7:15-ish, where Allen stared at my sister, asked her if she used to work at Kingsway, and she said yes, and you're Jin's brother. It was HILARIOUS. Small world indeed!
All in all, a very fun weekend :D I had a great time. I'm already planning out what I need and what kind of garb I need to make for me and my dolls for future events.
