Weekends are never long enough
Jan. 9th, 2023 08:01 amEspecially in the depths of winter. Stupid capitalism making us get out of bed in the cold and dark to go be productive or whatever.
Saturday I pleated up the last bit of white trim for the cap, then grabbed a wig head and stand and took some photos of the cap sans hair etc. I wanted a photo of the one side without the second layer of pleats as that's technically a trimming option. Then I wound up some yarn (green worsted bc I lost a hat on the bus, and a pinky sock yarn for... headband, probably) I didn't have a ton of time before I needed to leave the house.
I stopped at a local store to pick up another bottle of ink (I don't need more, truly, but it's SO pretty), nabbed a quick lunch, and then took off to the south side of town to meet up with my yarn bestie and local dyer AB to dye yarn!! Omg it was so much fun. The class was actually about speckling yarn, but it was just the two of us and AB pretty much let us run loose and pepper her with questions, so I learned a lot about dyeing yarn too, not just speckling it. I put photos of the mostly-dry yarn on Instagram.
After, we went to a cafe near the place we used to work at together and had a delicious salted caramel mocha and knitted and caught up bc we hadn't seen each other for almost a year (her mom passed away last spring, she spent a lot of time grieving, as she should!) and it was wonderful!! We're planning another catch-up after we are back from our respective vacations towards the end of February. And I was telling her about some of the yarn dyeing colours I would make if I had the wherewithal to pursue it, and she said I should write it down, so I did XD
Sunday was a bit more of a lazy day. I ripped some silk strips to trim the cap with, even hemmed one and gathered it for a bow, but I cut it way too short and it was HILARIOUSLY tiny. That got put on hold for another day. I cast on the green yarn to replace my lost hat, and got a few rows in (tbf, it starts with 6 stitches and I got to 48) before we had to leave again to go see Fiddler on the Roof. I didn't really know anything about the play, but I enjoyed it! Parking was the hardest, we waited in a line for nearly 20 minutes and rushed into the theatre literally three minutes before the doors closed. There were still tons of people behind us waiting to park too, and some of them were in our section as after the first number there was a lot of shuffling and whispered "sorry!"s as they were able to be seated.
After, we went to dinner with our friends who come to the shows with us, and it was lovely bc we haven't seen them in 4 months either. Our parking woes continued as they were in a different parkade and were out and seated at the restaurant before I even bothered turning the car on haha.
The downsides to the weekend were: maybe getting sick again, on Saturday morning I couldn't hear out of my left ear (in a way that didn't feel like it was overly waxy or anything), and in the evening I had that limb achiness. Sunday I felt OK, and today I am feeling a little run-down (but is that illness or just bc it's dark and cold?) Also, my mother has the same time block of shows that I do, and I can see them from our seats, but my youngest sibling was there as well and texted me ahead of time to let me know, so they could run interference if needed. It worked out OK, at least I had warning this time.
At the dye class, my friend asked AB if they sew or knit more in winter, and we agreed that sewing seems to be more of a summer hobby for us. My energy levels definitely support knitting more, it's a lot easier to pick up a ball of yarn and whatever its attached to than wrangling all the steps of sewing. I'm just gonna lean into it this year, consciously. Work whatever I feel like working on, that's what's gonna happen, and if I don't, then it doesn't. And it's ok!
