Alas, vacation time is never long enough! Mine was even cut short bc my cover person is off this week, chatty coworker left, and the other person walked out last week. I could have refused, but since I planned to do very little and my dental appointment was in the evening anyway, it was fine. I showered first because I'd been living my best house goblin life and really needed to (cough), and my hair looked amazing.

Dental was rebooked for yesterday morning bc the schedule hygenist had a family emergency. I really liked the guy who worked on me yesterday, he really cares about his work and the people he treats. And of course I like my dentist, he just didn't stay with me for long bc I wasn't there to see him (this time) lol.

Movin' on.

Basement: flooring has not yet been selected, so Friend and I will go to the place to make our selection. I talked to Mom on Sunday about everything, and she was going on about primer tinted "beige" and paint tinted a little darker. I did not inform her that I did not tint the primer, or that the paint I have already purchased is yellow. She's going to picture something bold, like a highlighter, or a deep gold, and I picked the barest shade of yellow possible. I asked my friend about our chances of getting not-beige flooring and she thinks we have a good chance hehehe. We're going to make a date of going to pick it out, I can bring a paint sample.

Mom also said her "OCD" was going off about me doing the finishing work myself. I think she means anxiety/perfectionism. Mom, I have told you before, I did not do any taping and mudding before, but I HAVE sanded and painted. Plus I am also heckin' anxious, so do you think I haven't spent literally hours reading up on how to finish a wall? I have. Please trust me.

But I haven't been back down since that first coat went on. I need more mud and possibly more tape, to move some more fabric and furniture, to look at what we have for sanding supplies. For sure we have paper, but I don't know about a block or anything.

Sewing: ACTUAL SEWING. (Not drywall sewing [personal profile] danabren lol) Friend is missing people and there's a con coming up in May she wants to go to. It's held over the Victoria Day long weekend, which also happens to be my birthday weekend, and our friend works at the historical park in that city, which is ALSO opening on that weekend. Verified that dress up is OK with advance noticed. The park is Edwardian-themed. The last time I was there, I wore a costume pirate coat because it was windy and cold and all I had brought with me was a hoodie and that coat, which was at least wool.

Does this mean I have to get started on a whole Edwardian ensemble to flounce around the park? Oh noooo...

I object to the British terminology for these time periods. What else can we call this time frame?

Yesterday was dedicated to taping the seams. The drywall panels are 4 feet wide, which is standard, but they were all inexplicably cut at 4-ish feet up the wall. My guess is a: the guy who did the work was like my grampa (an old man, jack of all trades) and cut them in half to make them more manageable for a single person to install, or b: off-cuts from another job. More work for me.

Y'all, I have never taped a drywall seam in my life. The horizontal seams are um well I half expect to need to reinstall them lol. I bought mesh for the vertical seams, which was a little easier. Two corners got taped too, both of which had gaps of varying widths (one corner was very bad). It looks a little more like a proper room now. I still have one corner to do, and then I think I will be out of drywall mud, so very likely I'll need to go back to the store AGAIN. Not helped by the mid-wall seam.

Y'all asked about the paint sample, and here you have it: a pale, soft, cool yellow, Van Gogh Candlelight!

The rest of the series is here, in dark-to-light order starting with Vincent's Mood. Looking here it's more like the barest hint of yellow in white haha. Mom probably would have picked Squid or something. Roomie and I had a LOT of fun picking out the colours we liked.

I've been on vacation all week, and it's been lovely to just wake up whenever I feel like it :D I've done a fair bit of knitting (finished a pair of socks, am halfway through the gusset decreases on a second pair), written very little (its a tricksy chapter), napped a bunch, played a lot of animal crossing, and done my laundry.

In bits and pieces, I've started work on getting the basement finished. A couple days were required to get the majority of the furniture out and take down the shelves and peg board (I would like to burn the lot; the shelves are bare plywood with the plainest outdoor brackets, and the pegboard where it was and in that size doesn't suit my needs). Today I moved the last furniture bits. One of the tables was moved underneath the main table, because at 6 ft x 4ft on 37" fence posts, I can't move it on my own very easily. Then I took the mudding compound I found in the basement and started to tackle the finishing. I think I need to get some drywall tape though, to make sure the joins in the drywall are extra smooth. And to add a bit of water to the mud, it's soft but not smooth and requires some effort to apply.

I went out yesterday with my roommate to do some errands, primarily (pause for dramatic effect) the paint shopping!! Did I pick out a colour that was not in my preferred range simply because it was named after Van Gogh? YES I DID. I was keeping the limitations of the space in mind, namely that it's a basement and it really ought to be as light as possible to maximize the light available, and it's not fucking beige. I might have too much paint, but I think it would look banging in the front hallway instead of dentist office brown, so we have a plan if it's required hehehe.

Really hoping I can fight putting the shelving etc back into place. I need this space to work for ME, not for Nicole who no longer lives here. Since I've reached a stopping place and I have a pretty detailed set of measurements, I shall spend some time now planning out how I want the room to look when it's ready to put back together.

We also went to Hot Topic and spent A Lot of Money (tm) on some mystery clips for Avatar the Last Airbender, and I bought a Jaskier Funko Pop. I resisted them for so long, namely because I didn't have the space in the apartment to display them, but now that I have space, I'm slowly expanding the collection. Still trying to keep it to things I REALLY REALLY enjoy. Like Kuzco as a llama, Kronk as a Junior Chipmunk leader, and Grogu with the frog eggs.
