Jan. 14th, 2010 10:13 pmJust finished the last two Valdemar anthologies. I have two thoughts.
- I am debating the awesomeness or suckiness of a story that very, very obviously parodies Scooby-Doo. Right down to the "and I would have gotten away with it too, if not for you meddlingkids Heralds!"
- The last two books featured at least two recurring storylines by the same author. It occurs to me that this is, essentially, sanctioned fanfiction. When did I miss out on that train? (What's really kinda hilarious is I just tossed all my old Valdemar fanfic with hardly a glance at it.)
I'm going to Renovation in 2011, I think I'll make myself some Whites :)
And since I know everyone's just dyyyyyyyyying to know, I've read every book in the series (21 last time I counted, which was just after Mage Storms came out) at least twice, and one of those reads was in chronological order. My enjoyment of Last Herald-Mage was likely diminished by my sister coming to me crying when a Certain Character died in book 1 while I was mired in the Gryphons' books (thus I never grew attached to him), and the second read just emphasized how fucking DEPRESSING they are. Not likely to read them a third time. I like my books slightly happier, kthx.
Also, I'm POSITIVE I read somewhere in the series that Talia moved like someone who'd had their feet broken, and I thought it was Kerowyn's book, but I absolutely cannot find it anymore. Epic sadface.

Date: 2010-01-15 06:00 am (UTC)This is probably why I didn't enjoy Candle in the Storm as much as Woman... because it was a lot darker and the ending was rather unsatisfactory. I'm holding out hope for book 3, but eh... so long to wait :(

Date: 2010-01-15 06:05 am (UTC)I've heard that the love interest in the Alberich trilogy is a thinly veiled mary sue. -_-;
My other problem with Lackey is, of course... the cat whiskers. -_-; goddamn crazy doll lady.

Date: 2010-01-15 06:56 am (UTC)I still read other books (Storm Breaking has a cool ending IMO) but some of of the others, not so much. And OMG she so was. Alberich is awesomesauce, but wow.
I think of her everytime I find a shedder whisker. That is not something to be remembered for :/

Date: 2010-01-15 07:34 am (UTC)IIRC, it wasn't an outright mention that Talia moved like she'd had her feet broken, it was a mention that she moved with a limp of some kind -- and it was at the banquet in By The Sword, after Kero offed that wild boar that was about to make Kingnuggets out of the Rethwellan royalty. Talia and Dirk came to ask for aid in the war against Ancar.
...oh god I just yanked that out of my head without even looking at the book what's wrong with me

Date: 2010-01-16 02:25 am (UTC)There's a 3rd Alberich book? AWESOME. And yeah, I got the Mary-Sue reference with the love interest in his stories- the description fits pretty well with the author, if you've ever seen her pics. But Alberich is frigging AWESOME, so just ignore her.
