Just finished the last two Valdemar anthologies. I have two thoughts.

- I am debating the awesomeness or suckiness of a story that very, very obviously parodies Scooby-Doo. Right down to the "and I would have gotten away with it too, if not for you meddling kids Heralds!"

- The last two books featured at least two recurring storylines by the same author. It occurs to me that this is, essentially, sanctioned fanfiction. When did I miss out on that train? (What's really kinda hilarious is I just tossed all my old Valdemar fanfic with hardly a glance at it.)

I'm going to Renovation in 2011, I think I'll make myself some Whites :)

And since I know everyone's just dyyyyyyyyying to know, I've read every book in the series (21 last time I counted, which was just after Mage Storms came out) at least twice, and one of those reads was in chronological order. My enjoyment of Last Herald-Mage was likely diminished by my sister coming to me crying when a Certain Character died in book 1 while I was mired in the Gryphons' books (thus I never grew attached to him), and the second read just emphasized how fucking DEPRESSING they are. Not likely to read them a third time. I like my books slightly happier, kthx.

Also, I'm POSITIVE I read somewhere in the series that Talia moved like someone who'd had their feet broken, and I thought it was Kerowyn's book, but I absolutely cannot find it anymore. Epic sadface.

I never ended up reading those books that you mention with the Certain Character dying because I cheated and looked into book two, only to find out that the love was rather dead. And then I skimmed a bit more and put it back down because I, too, like my books slightly happier as well. (Kinda why I'm not really looking forward to reading Magebound because it... I don't know, after the sweetness of The Elf and Shoemaker, it's kind of a slap in the face XD)

*babbles*

I don't mind a dark book or two, but the whole trilogy?? Ugh. I'll give her points for having a homosexual main character (I first read them back in like, 1996, when they were still new and shiny and fairly controversial yet), but hot damn, they are an "experience" D:

This is probably why I didn't enjoy Candle in the Storm as much as Woman... because it was a lot darker and the ending was rather unsatisfactory. I'm holding out hope for book 3, but eh... so long to wait :(

More reasons why you should read The Elf and Shoemaker. It's hot and sweet (and damn short D: ) and yes. I'm still amused as beans that I now have, more or less, printed pr0n on my bookshelf. Hah XD

There was Kerowyn fic written for Yuletide! It made me want to steal back my copy of By the Sword. I'd re-read Oathbound/breakers again too, but probably none of the others.

I've heard that the love interest in the Alberich trilogy is a thinly veiled mary sue. -_-;

My other problem with Lackey is, of course... the cat whiskers. -_-; goddamn crazy doll lady.

Ooooh I'll have to check that out! Kero was awesome :)

I still read other books (Storm Breaking has a cool ending IMO) but some of of the others, not so much. And OMG she so was. Alberich is awesomesauce, but wow.

I think of her everytime I find a shedder whisker. That is not something to be remembered for :/

IIRC, it wasn't an outright mention that Talia moved like she'd had her feet broken, it was a mention that she moved with a limp of some kind -- and it was at the banquet in By The Sword, after Kero offed that wild boar that was about to make Kingnuggets out of the Rethwellan royalty. Talia and Dirk came to ask for aid in the war against Ancar.

...oh god I just yanked that out of my head without even looking at the book what's wrong with me

That's what I thought too, so I reread that part (kingnuggets *snerk*) half a dozen times. Perhaps my brain is making things up on me. The only other character I can think of besides Kero who'd notice is Darkwind, and I don't want to slog through Winds of Fury to find it, if it exists. * shrug*

BRB, reading Kero again :D

The broken feet thing WAS Talia- they were broken while she was under torture in the neighboring kingdom after Kris died. That's why she was carried down the aisle for her wedding.

There's a 3rd Alberich book? AWESOME. And yeah, I got the Mary-Sue reference with the love interest in his stories- the description fits pretty well with the author, if you've ever seen her pics. But Alberich is frigging AWESOME, so just ignore her.

I remember when she got her feet busted (holy shit, that is still hard to read, 14 years later. Waaaaah Kris ;_; ) but I remember someone specifically going "moved like her feet had been broken". I'll chalk it up to this silly brain of mine since that specific passage doesn't seem to exist.

I <3 Alberich :3 And the song about him. And I'm really good at pretending that Sues don't exist XD
