Dec. 5th, 2013 10:29 pmI just went back several entries and realized I didn't post about my toe at all D: Like, I never even mentioned it. I posted about it lots on Facebook so some of you will find this to be EXTREMELY old news.
On the last day of May, I dressed up all summery in a dress and sandals and went to work. After a couple hours, I took some stuff upstairs, and on my way back, I went to open a door to the freight elevator lobby, which opened on top of my toe, dragged across the nail and then pulled some of it up and jammed it back down into my skin. I went "ow", saw I was bleeding, managed to get my foot out of the sandal (the pair was about $170) before I wrecked it, and went out again to get a kleenex. It hurt a lot and was bleeding quite a bit, and I was close to the doctor's office, so I hobbled over there. Yep. He wasn't sure at first if we'd have to remove the whole nail, which is what they usually do with a nail injury, but decided to cut the torn bit free and see. Luckily it came out pretty easily. I was on WCB for a couple days, and of course this happened the weekend before the bedbug spray so I was hobbling around on my heel with a giant ball of cotton on my toe and trying to pack everything.
I was very lucky. I don't think my tetanus shots are up to date, but I didn't get an infection, and though it took nearly 3 and a half months, my nail grew out relatively normally and you can't really tell there was a huge chunk of it missing for a long time. I had to cover it every day right up to, during, and after San Antonio. Wearing costumes at Animethon was the first time in 2.5 months I'd worn close-toed shoes for any length of time. I was worried I'd be wearing sandals even in October.
