Corset mock-up
Aug. 14th, 2016 09:19 amY'all will have to make do without photos :( My full length mirror broke in April and my bathroom mirror sucks (but later I might take it all to my friend's house and use her mirrors. Stay tuned!)
To enlarge the pattern, I measured the front and increased that on a photocopier to how long I knew my busk was. The front piece ended up being about 15" long. Then I traced everything from my copy and added seam allowances. This morning I woke up at ridiculous o'clock (aka: 5 am), gave up trying to sleep and started sewing (is 7am too early? I hope not...) by first cutting out my mock-up. I used a heavy twill and cut the busk out of a partially-finished corset I started a million years ago and never finished, and then attached a pair of lacing strips.
I left the side bust gore open since I am not particularly busty, and sure enough I needed to pull that in. I can also bring in the top of the side/side-back seam a bit. The pattern actually fits me pretty well! I had a nice even gap of about 4", the back seems really short but if I need to lengthen it, it's by one grommet hole. It doesn't compress over the back of my hips at all because it doesn't even reach them (I don't know if that's good or not). My belly still likes to fall out of the front and push the busk forward. I wonder if a spoon busk would help, but they are not cheap and shipping is expensive :/ I could kind of get my belly into the corset, but then the top of the busk sat WAY too low. And of course, I have no boning of any kind on it atm, which will shrink it a bit (a lot, really). I really liked how it felt, how the seaming pulled around my body. I think it will be very workable!
Then I got WAY too hot and had to get undressed. Now I'm pondering a nap. I will think on these things as well :3
