A break + hobby noodles

It was amazing what a difference of 10c/20-odd F makes. Walked out yesterday afternoon and did not immediately feel like peeling my skin off. It was 30C/84F instead of ASJKHAOY:ODAUS hot, and it even rained later in the evening. Glorious! Today is expected to be an eminently reasonable 25C. And the fire inspectors/building people wrote "no problem!" on my note and the kittens greeted me at the door :D
Looking for Too Hot to Function activities for my hands that might pass kitten inspection, and inspired by
atherleisure, I pulled out the cross stitch I'd gotten from my aunt's estate after she passed in 2014. I last did work on it literally 10 years ago. I remember we all gathered with the tubs of yarn and other crafty items and distributed it amongst the group. I claimed the started piece and the bags of floss separately, but I don't remember in which order (they'd been in different parts of the items). I remember working on it a bit in June 2014 on the way to my maternal grandmother's memorial and a little bit after. Then it got set aside for "later" and for whatever reason, "later" turned into 10 years.
The design is called "A Summer Stroll". The design was copyright 1998, and I don't know how long she had it before I got it. Where my aunt left off was a little bit of the lower right part of the skirt. I did not add much more to it. I had left it in the hoop this whole time, probably because I was tooootally going to pick it up again "soon". Whoops. It got removed a couple days ago and I pulled off all of the masking tape my aunt had put around the edge of the cloth to keep it from fraying. Most of the glue was separating from the tape and it came off very easily.
Yesterday I watched a whole bunch of videos on YouTube to get pumped for starting it. Flosstube is a whole thing that's rather intimidating!! Once I was home, I pressed it and rehooped it, picking a corner to just start working. I added a tiny bit more, and then took a photo to document where I started from as I only added a single length of floss so it wasn't overly changed. The edges are very gummy from the tape, and I had to clip the top half of the fabric up as it was dangling quite a lot. I will need to figure out an edge solution and SOON.
I've also discovered that my eyes do not like focusing on such small things up close. The pattern is hard enough to read (and covered in weird tape and of COURSE the part I worked on was partially wrinkled) and then the fabric is iiiiiitty bitty. Really time to get those new glasses lol. I've been looking at hoop stands and larger frames and a better floss organizing system. And project bags, of course! It's been hanging out in a ziploc bag forever, but why ziploc when you can have a cute pouch!
I have Big Plans to continue cross stitching too. I was gifted an "inappropriate" pattern book that I LOVE and really want to make some pieces from, so I'm going to be looking at my stash of threads at some point too :D

Date: 2024-07-12 03:28 pm (UTC)I really like scroll frames, and I love my floor stand now that I’m not in my 20’s and don’t like sitting curled up with the top of the frame against my knee any more. For less space the legs that connect to the ends of the scroll rollers so it can sit across you lap are decent. (I stitch with one hand above the fabric and one hand below so I hate having to hold the hoop or frame.)

Date: 2024-07-12 05:20 pm (UTC)I'm definitely looking for some kind of lap frame and/or holder. I too cannot sit like pretzel anymore, and I think being able to move my hands as needed would definitely help with repetitive motions and positions. My FB marketplace is turning up bupkiss locally.
