Two weeks ago I finished watching The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air on Netflix. It was so good :) I enjoyed it so much and the storyline has held up over the years even though the fashions did not (oh the early 90s! How I wish o didn't remember you!)
I was a bit at a loss as to what to watch next. I have quite a few series saved up and have started a couple of them but they tend to be ones I want to be able to pay a little more attention to. I've been to calgary twice in 2 weeks and driving 600km round trip has been playing merry hell on my wrists. I started a hand-sewn jacket (with silk thread! Oooooh it's so nice to sew with!) but I can barely do two seams before my thumb is aching so bad I have to wrap it (and my whole hand) in a tensor :( So not much sewing going on atm, and thus prime TV-bingeing.
So I picked a series I hadn't marked for watching but had heard was good. I saw part of one episode of Farscape what fells like a hundred years ago. We only watched 10 or 15 minutes before other stuff was happening but what I saw wasn't terrible, and I'd heard it was pretty good from others. Well it was trending on Netflix and keeping in mind that people who have generally good taste in sci-fi series liked it, decided I would give it a shot.
To say I am enjoying it is an understatement.
It is really a great series. The first few eps (and most of the first season, really) has its growing pains. I wasn't really sold on John right away and even now sometimes I just shake my head at him. He gets sucked through a wormhole to an unknown part of the Galaxy/universe (I don't think it's ever named, it just IS. Sometimes I like that, when it's plausible enough to be presented without explanation) onto a ship with criminals. Except their criminal status really depends on who you ask. Wacky adventures then ensue, often compounded by John's complete lack of knowledge about where he is.
Within 4 episodes I was completely in love with Zhaan, a priestess of sorts who is also a plant. John grew on me and I have come to adore him as well. I was surprised by the use of puppets; two characters are made by Jim Henson's creature shop. But even that was fun after the first moment of "oh what?" Nowadays I think there'd be much more of a push to use cg instead of a puppet.
Zhaan is my favouritest of the favourites but my next favourite is hands down Aeryn Sun. She is close enough to human that she and her fellow species members don't need prosthetics or extensive makeup. I had a bit of a disconnect at first because she is played by Claudia black, whom I remember best from the whole 2 episodes of SG-1 I've seen. Aeryn is so different from my memory of vala, but I got over it quickly. She's totally badass, stomping around in flat shoes and practical clothing, trained as a soldier and ready willing and able to kick major ass at the drop of hat. John doesn't try to bring gender ideals with him from earth, but that might be because she dropped him to the floor the first time they met.
The stories are generally well crafted, not excessively cheesy and also not so serious that they're boring. Shit started getting real at the end of season 2 and in the first few eps of season 3, I purposely watched episodes that I knew were going to be sad right before the election on Tuesday because I was so hoping for a good election that it would ease my sadness (and it was!). There's a couple downsides to watching a show that's long since finished. I knew that character wasn't in the whole series. I'm suseptible to spoilers because I wanted to read fanfic and see other fan work. On the upside, I can watch 52 episodes in 10 days and get through it that much faster so I don't have to worry about spoilers anymore.
And augh, I ship Aeryn and John so hard. Their relationship is built so slowly over a season and a half that it would be easy to ignore it until it starts to go there. But it doesn't. There's a fair amount of tension that's being maintained - they're obviously attracted to one another, but it's mostly Aeryn refusing to act on it. She's totally down for some hot no strings attached sex, tells him as much, but always reminds him that she doesn't want his emotions. And he's aware enough to know that emotions will be involved at least on his part, so he turns her down too. It's so refreshing to have emotionally mature characters recognizing that their mutual want is incompatible and not forcing it. Ah!! I ship it. I ship it forever. I got some spoilers on an upcoming episode that I think is going to happen sooner rather than later and I'm not looking forward to it. At least there will always be fanfic.
I'm loving this show so so so much. I can't believe I waited this long to watch it. It's broken my heart twice already and I'm sure it's gonna be broken at least twice more. Amazing.
